Revelation chapter 17 begins by revealing Mystery Babylon is a great harlot that sits on many waters: “Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters’” (Revelation 17:1). Then, later it is shown that the waters that the great harlot sits upon are the sea of humanity: “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are the peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues” (Revelation 17:15).
When someone sits on someone else, they are trying to manipulate or control them. This is typically done through forcing a person to be silent or to not do something. To “sit on” something can also be about keeping something secret by preventing people from knowing the truth or delaying its release.
“Mystery Babylon, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth” is a spiritual entity that has been sitting on humanity to control them any way that she can for quite some time. My guess is that it probably goes back to the serpent tempting the woman to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. One of the most amazing facts revealed about the great harlot is that all peoples were deceived by Babylon’s sorceries. It doesn’t say that just the great men of the earth were deceived. It says: “for by your sorcery all the nations [peoples] were deceived” (Revelation 18:23).
The great harlot of Babylon seeks to keep mankind, especially believers, in a state of adultery, defilement, and materialism. Her luxurious seat has been rooted in Rome, specifically the Vatican. Catholic congregants are not necessarily bad, but the institutional structure of the Black Pope, White Pope, and Gray Pope is. We could talk about all the pagan god statues, sun images, and Asherah poles in St. Peter’s Basilica. We could talk about the Paul VI Vatican Hall that looks like a snake where the stage forms the mouth of the serpent and the columns behind it look like its teeth. Or, we could merely note that the witches and satanists use Jesuit churches to do their wicked and evil things.
This and other satanic encroachments in Christ’s Church are why God is releasing the Beast to take Babylon down: “And the ten horns which you saw on the Beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the Beast, until the words of God are fulfilled” (Revelation 17:16-17). Revelation 17:12 tells us that the ten horns are ten kings who have no kingdom but receive authority as kings for one hour with the Beast. And then, the faithful and true Lamb of God and those with Him will conquer all of them (Rev. 17:14).
God’s people are told to rejoice over Babylon’s violent destruction because God is acting as their avenger (Rev. 18:20). Be encouraged because all this is the prelude to the great multitude with the voice of many waters freely worshipping the King of kings and Lord of lords: “Halleluia! For our Lord God, omnipotent, reigns” (Revelation 19:6), which is followed by the announcement that it’s time for most glorious wedding feast of the Lamb: “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, ‘Write: “Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!”’ And he said to me, ‘These are the true sayings of God’” (Revelation 19:7-9).
