Next week is Shavuot on the Hillel Calendar! Grab your sword, because it’s time to dive into some thought-provoking Scriptures that examine various aspects of this Biblical holiday. “Shavuot” is the Hebrew name for Pentecost. It is a multifaceted festival. It is a time for celebrating the gift of the Torah (Word of God), given to Moses on Mount Sinai. It is a time for celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit, the tongues of fire alighting and igniting the heads in the upper room. It is a time for celebrating the season of the wheat harvest, for the fields are white and ripe for harvest.
On Shavuot, God’s people read the Book of Ruth. Though a Moabite foreigner, Ruth followed her beloved Israelite mother-in-law Naomi into the unknown.
When Ruth and her sister-in-law, Orpah, found themselves widowed, Orpah leaves to go back to her family while Ruth stays. Orpah’s name – back of the neck – fit her, because she turned her back on her mother-in-law in Naomi’s time of need. Meanwhile, Ruth exemplified faithfully cleaving to Naomi and her God: “So she [Naomi] said, ‘See, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods. Go follow your sister-in-law.’ But Ruth replied, ‘Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God’” (Ruth 1:15-16).
Ruth corresponds to the soul that tenaciously holds onto the promises of God, come what may. Her faith and actions led to the birth of the sweet psalmist of Israel – King David. Technically, Ruth was King David’s great-grandmother: “Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, BOAZ BEGOT OBED BY RUTH, Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David the king” (Matt. 1:5-6). Significantly, Oprah’s descendant was the uncircumcised Philistine – Goliath. Every little choice we make truly matters.
I believe that Ruth’s devout heart cry, “Wherever you go, I will go… your people shall be my people, and your God my God,” is one of the reasons that King David had a heart after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14). It was his generational blessing of worshiping and following God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).
Let us join the Hebrews, as One New Man in Messiah Yeshua, in rediscovering this precious book of the Bible. Just as Ruth married into the tribe of Judah, so does the Bride of Christ.
P.S. There are several different Hebrew calendars. When I asked the Lord about what Biblical Calendar to use, He told me that all of man's marks of time are off, but He knows the time. Therefore, I join the majority of Jewish people in celebrating the Biblical Feasts according to the Hillel Calendar to act as a bridge for the One New Man in Christ.
