GOD RELENTING FROM DISASTER

“ 10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm” (Jonah 3:10-4:2 NKJV).

Recently, I personally believe that God relented from allowing disaster to come upon Earth. This has happened before. I am sure many times. I know of three such instances (possibly four) in the past 10 years. This last time on May 25th was an 11th Hour relenting (last possible moment). If you were looking for the possibility of an asteroid splitting in three and hitting on 25 May 2024, you may have wondered what happened. God relented, or in the words of Jonah: for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm” (Jonah 4:2). I simply say that God had mercy. He got sufficient repentance to extend His mercy, which is His beautiful heart.

What was your reaction? Did you think that you missed it? Did you think that the words from the Lord were off? Were you angry that God had mercy? Were your thoughts similar to Jonah who proclaimed twice “it is better for me to die than to live” (Jonah 4:3,8)?

The second time Jonah’s anger led him to say, “it is better for me to die than live” was because the Lord caused Jonah to confront his own heart condition. Once God relented from judging Nineveh, Jonah sat on the east side of the city to watch what would become of Nineveh. Jonah built a shelter, then God caused a plant to grow and shade his head, which caused him to be very grateful because he was miserable.

Notice how one of the greatest preachers of all time had an anger issue. Jonah was angry that the Word that the Lord prophesied through him didn’t come true. But… didn’t it? Isn’t God’s goal to reach the peoples’ hearts so that they turn from their wicked ways? Notice the divine set up. God blesses Jonah in the midst of his temper tantrum. After God graciously provided Jonah shade in scorching heat, He provided a worm to wither the plant the next morning. Once the plant was damaged, God prepared a vehement east wind and caused the sun beat on Jonah’s head so much so that Jonah felt faint and again wished death for himself.

This is when God corrects Jonah by sharing His own heart: “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?” (Jonah 4:10-11).

I believe that God Most High not only had mercy on our world where millions of souls hung in the balance, but the Lord has given a very short reprieve to the main onslaught of all seven seals being released at the same time. I understand that some of God’s righteous judgments will still be hitting; however, it will not be the overwhelming holy reverential fear experience, yet.

God is giving a little more time, due to enough repentance in His sight, for people to get right with Him and make more preparations. What will be more critical than life-sustaining food, water, and shelter, is where you will live. Some places simply won’t be safe in the coming days. Everyone needs to double-check the perfect will of the Heavenly Father about where they should be physically located; then obey come what may.

Remember that we have only a very short reprieve before the main onslaught of end-time events hit simultaneously. No one knows what a “very short reprieve” really means, except the Father. Let’s not waste these days of mercy.

“The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6-7).

Give em heaven!!!
