One of the most important keys to a successful and stable life is to forgive others. Right after the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6, we are told: “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15). Notice that Yeshua does not make any exceptions to forgiving others. It’s pretty simple. Forgive others and the Heavenly Father will forgive you.
Many times, we need to forgive others who have genuinely hurt us or someone we love. When this is the case, we must choose to forgive the perpetrator, as Yeshua did when He was on the cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). We all don’t understand the full implications of what we do when we miss the mark, so this statement can apply to all of humanity.
A missing ingredient in the forgiveness equation for many people is forgiving yourself. Just like we must love ourselves before we can rightly love others and God, so is it with forgiveness. Forgiveness starts with forgiving yourself, then flows outward from your inner reality.
The Greek word for “trespasses” in Matthew 6:14-15 is paraptōma, which carries several meanings: a fall beside or near something, a lapse or deviation from truth and uprightness, a misdeed, a sin, or a trespass. When we don’t forgive ourselves or others, we fall beside, which means we stay connected to the offense and the offending person. John Bevere calls offense the bait of Satan because unforgiveness leads to bitterness and anger, and bitterness leads to offense. Offence is a terrible place to live. It is awful place to be bound because it causes a person’s love to grow cold: “And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. … And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:10,12 KJV). The good news is that forgiveness frees us up, severing any ungodly connection connected to an offense.
Many people who don’t forgive themselves are hard on themselves when they make a mistake (a misdeed). Truly mistakes are one of the best ways a person can learn and stay humble. Screwing up can be hard to face, but it’s so freeing when we do. When we learn what not to do in making a mistake and come to God asking for forgiveness, we can make a fresh start with new tools. Mistakes are only fatal if we don’t acknowledge them and remain in unforgiveness.
I believe that being childlike with God is key to so many things, including trusting Him and coming to Him with intentional or unintentional sin (mistakes). When my son was growing up, we used to watch “The Magic School Bus.” Miss Frizzle had a fantastic saying about mistakes: “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” If you choose to be humble and teachable, mistakes are simply a springboard to treating others better and for your own personal growth.
So, remember, forgiving ourselves is the first step to choosing to forgive others (no matter how one feels) because the person that hurt us or someone we love truly did not know what they were doing.
Give em heaven!!!
