DESPISE SPOTTED GARMENTS

As I was studying the Book of Jude, the phrase “despise even a garment which is spotted with the things of the flesh” (Jude 1:23) stood out to me. “Despise” that’s an interesting word to use.

When I looked at “despise” in my Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (10th Edition), I boiled it down to several concepts. When we despise any garment spotted with the flesh, we look down on it with contempt or aversion. We regard it as worthless and distasteful. We not only have a strong dislike but loathing for fleshly things and coverings. We vehemently condemn them as low, vile, feeble, or ignominious. Ignominious is something shameful, disgraceful, dishonorable, despicable, degrading, etc.

All these concepts for despising garments spotted with the things of the flesh are paired with a heaping portion of warnings about ungodly people. In my own words, I break this part of the Book of Jude as follows: The ungodly who turn the grace of God into lasciviousness – wanton, lewd, or lustful behavior. The ungodly who corrupt themselves as the dumb beasts that they are naturally. These have gone the way of Cain. For greedy gain, they sell out their own people. They rebel against godly leadership as well as deny the Heavenly Father and the Son. They live a wasteful partying life. The ungodly speak flattering words for their own selfish gain and always follow after their own lusts. They are righteously judged for all their ungodly deeds and words, and they go to the place reserved for them, which is the blackness of darkness.

Quite sobering. No wonder Jude admonished believers to despise garments spotted with the things of the flesh.

It is also noteworthy that after we are doubly warned about the ungodly following after their own lusts, Jude exhorts: “Let us keep ourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of Lord Jesus Christ and for the life which is ours forever. And on some of them whoever they may be, heap coals of fire [bless them]; And when they repent, have mercy on them with compassion; despise even a garment which is spotted with the things of the flesh” (Jude 1:21-23 Lamsa’s Aramaic).

So, let us look for the mercy of Messiah Yeshua, as we keep ourselves in the love of God.

Give em heaven!!!
