Woo Hoo!!! The Feast of Tabernacles starts at sundown tonight – 16 October 2024!
The temporary dwelling places (sukkot) built during the Feast of Tabernacles remind God’s people of the clouds of glory that surrounded Is-real during their wanderings through the desert on their way to the Promised Land. The supernatural clouds of glory that surrounded the Israelites served several purposes, including protecting them from dangerous animals (snakes and scorpions - Deut. 8:5) as well as shading them from the searing desert sun (Isa. 4:6).
The most accepted tradition is that there were seven clouds in total: one of each of their four sides, one above, one below, and one guiding cloud in front. My gut is that these seven clouds were in echad oneness – plurality in one. The cloud in front was YHVH wrapped as a Pillar of Cloud leading Israel by day.: “And the Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night” (Exodus 13:21 NAS).
According to Shabbat 33b, the Pillar of Fire appeared in the evening before the Pillar of Cloud had disappeared, so that the Israelites were never without a guide. “The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people” (Exodus 13:22). The Hebrew Sage Rashi interpreted this as the Pillar of Cloud handed over the camp to the Pillar of Fire and vice versa – that before the one set the other rose (Shabbat 23b, Exo. 13:22, Rashi).
It was a miraculous life. As His people journeyed through the wilderness, their clothes never ever wore out. Imagine that for a moment. Forty years of walking in a hot and dry land, and your shoes look and feel perfect. It sounds like a heavenly foreshadow of “who is this that comes up from the wilderness, leaning on her Beloved?” (Song of Solomon 8:5).
Everyone who desires to be part of His Pure and Spotless Bride has wilderness experiences. Everyone. Always remember that there is a fairly quick transition from the High Holy Days – Days of Awe – with their somber mood of repentance and judgment to one of rejoicing and celebration. Tabernacles is not called “The Season of Our Joy” for nothing. Rejoicing and joy is intimately connected to the Bride of Christ: “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10).
